6th place – Mercedes-Benz W220<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was not a failure, but something closest to it – perhaps. Debuted in 1998, the W220 was supposed to replace the undoubtedly legendary, but at the same time odious 140th body on the market, and coped with its task<\/a> only formally. This is the only S-Class in history that seems to be ashamed of its past and its destiny. After the “boar”, the 220th looked too modest, was more compact, lighter, more economical, currying public opinion more than emphasizing the status and life achievements of its own owner. And this is not to mention the really sagging quality…<\/p>\n

\n

The verdict is the only S-Class to wear a taxi<\/a> hat.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

5th place – Mercedes-Benz W221<\/strong><\/p>\n

In fact, the changer of the 220th was a big step forward, or rather an attempt to resurrect the ideals of the W140 body. Returned, at least in part, majesty in appearance – the S-class again began to look like the ruler of the autobahn, and not a dull taxi driver. The electronics began to fail less, the quality of the finish improved noticeably (compared to the W220). And buyers did not remain indifferent. For the first time in three generations of the S-Class, sales of the 221 exceeded half a million.<\/p>\n

The verdict is an obvious progress against the background of its predecessor. But still only fifth place…<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

4th place – Mercedes-Benz W116<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"All<\/a><\/p>\n

The first car to be officially called the S-Class debuted in 1972. This, by the way, is the first and only Mercedes-Benz, which was awarded the title of “Best European Car of the Year”. But we love him not only for this. The body of the W116 is the perfect embodiment of restrained beauty and boundless self-respect, which overwhelmed all Mercedes from the late 60s to the early 80s. This S-Class may seem rustic in design<\/a> and equipment in the basic versions with an index of 280. But it turned into a plague of the executive class when a 6.9-liter V8 (286 hp, 550 Nm) was under the hood. This is where the legs of all modern AMG Escos grow from…<\/p>\n

The verdict is a classic Mercedes-Benz sedan at its best. Elegant, timeless, expensive<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

3rd place – Mercedes-Benz W222<\/strong><\/p>\n

You can say whatever you want about the declining quality standards of today's premium cars, but the W222, which is about to retire, has stood the test of time admirably. Today it (not without the help of restyling in 2017) looks just as relevant as it did at the time of its debut. Moreover, looking at the photo of the new W223, it is still unclear who replaces whom… Separate respect to the 222nd for the successful restart of the Maybach franchise. It is quite logical and deserved that this S-class crossed the grandmaster mark of half a million back in November 2019.<\/p>\n

Verdict – the best luxury sedan in the world of the last five years<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

2nd place – Mercedes-Benz W140<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here the holivar may well begin. Indeed, many, not without reason, consider the W140 not just the best S-class and not even just the best Mercedes, but in general the best car on the planet Earth. And in the early 90s, he certainly was just that. With his technological level, he trampled all competitors into the dirt. And it's not just the number of gadgets on board. No one at that time knew how to combine such incredible comfort for passengers with such incredible obedience for the driver. It was the Everest of German engineering! But the tragedy of the W140 is in the continuation of its phenomenal virtues. Outrageously expensive to build and perhaps not the most elegant S-Class in history, the Boar hit the market at a terribly unfortunate time. Added to the economic crisis in Germany was the growing strength of the green movement,<\/p>\n

Verdict: an ingenious car that was unlucky with its year of birth<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

1st place – Mercedes-Benz W126<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"All<\/a><\/p>\n

Above all the other “esques”, the 126th rises like a basketball player who has looked at a matinee in a kindergarten. In terms of sales, anyway. For 12 years of conveyor life, its circulation just a little did not reach 900 thousand – figures unattainable for everyone else. And it is not difficult to understand why he was so loved. You can talk for a long time about design outside of time, quality not for fear, but for conscience or indisputable historical significance. Or you can just remember the current Mercedes-Benz slogan, which is perfect for the 126th. Yes, yes, The Best or Nothing seems to be invented about him. And on the horizon there are no worthy applicants to change the status quo.<\/p>\n
