Mercedes-Benz opened a series of automotive premieres at the CES 2022 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The Vision EQXX electric sedan concept has been hailed as the most efficient model in the history of the German brand. The production version is expected in 2024.<\/p>\n

For over a year, Mercedes has been making fun of us with Vision EQXX teasers, emphasizing the concept's importance to the company. Meanwhile, at the level of ideas, as it turned out, there is nothing new in this: it is just a collection of already known techniques and materials, but the collection is good, well-researched. The German press immediately dubbed the Vision EQXX the electric equivalent of the very efficient Volkswagen XL1 diesel coupe ten years ago, but it seems more correct and appropriate to compare the Mercedes concept to the Dutch electric liftback Lightyear One, which will begin production in the middle of this year at the Valmet plant in Finland – a similar elongated shape and a large solar panel on the roof, the Lightyear One alone offers up to 70 km of “free” mileage per day, and up to 25 km for the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX.<\/p>\n

But the Vision EQXX has better aerodynamics: a claimed cx factor of 0.17 versus 0.20 for the Lightyear One, while Mercedes managed to keep the conventional mirrors rather than replacing them with uncomfortable cameras. Whether the car is beautiful or not, everyone decides for himself, but many have already noticed the lack of distinctive Mersedese features in the Vision EQXX – in front it could be mistaken for the new Volkswagen of the ID family, if not for the coat of arms with a three-pointed star.<\/p>\n

The front of the Vision EQXX features movable fins that direct air to the battery cooling system when needed, while the aft features an extended diffuser with a retractable section that extends the vehicle's overall length when driving at high speeds. The total length in statics is 4630 mm, the wheelbase is 2800 mm, the rear wheel track is 50 mm less than the front wheel track. It turns out that the dimensions of the Vision EQXX are slightly smaller than the modern C-class, that is, it does not claim to be a flagship model.<\/p>\n

Ultra-low rolling resistance tires have been developed by Bridgestone and are fitted to 20-inch lightweight forged magnesium wheels with translucent hubcaps. The brake discs are made from aluminum to keep the weight down. The curb weight of the car is 1,750 kg, of which 495 kg is the battery together with its composite body and power electronics unit.<\/p>\n

Projects such as the Vision EQXX are not about sporty dynamics and power, although the concept is said to have used Formula 1 technology. ” and the maximum speed are not indicated, but there is no certainty that the efficiency<\/a> of the power plant will also be 95%. But the main feature in this case is the cruising range on a single charge, exceeding 1000 km. A 920V battery with a capacity of just under 100 kWh with CATL silicon anode cells is 50% smaller and 30% lighter than the flagship Mercedes-Benz EQS series liftback batteries (107.8 kWh).<\/p>\n

The Vision EQXX makes extensive use of composite materials incorporating biofibers, 3D printing and bionic structures (such as perforated shock cups), but the body is made of steel and design<\/a>ed for mass production.<\/p>\n

Inside, there are four separate seats separated by a high central tunnel and a completely featureless front panel with a seamless 47.5-inch screen with a resolution of 7680×660 pixels. In the decoration – only natural materials, mainly from renewable biomaterials and recycled materials: cacti, bamboo, mushrooms, plastic bottles, cardboard, food waste and even used diapers – yes, now all this is called premium finishing.<\/p>\n

Another interesting feature is the energy-efficient sound system: compact speakers are integrated into the seats so that they are closer to the ears of the drivers and do not require a lot of energy.<\/p>\n

The official statement does not say when the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX will turn into a production model, but the British magazine Autocar, citing chief designer Gordon Wagener, says that this will happen in 2024 and that the production sedan will be very similar to the production sedan concept.
