Although the 9-3 is a car from the “late GM” era, and there seems to be nothing specifically Swedish about it. Or is there? In the first part, we analyze the problems of the body, interior and electrics, and in the second – the chassis, transmission and motors.

Technics

Many perceive the second generation 9-3 (aka NG, New Generation among Saabists) as a complete copy of the Opel Vectra C in a Swedish body, but in fact it is a completely different car, albeit based on the same platform and set of units. The number of changes is so great that no assembly larger than a throttle can be simply put from one car to another. With all the external similarity, there is something else… by and large, everything.

The hubs have their own ABS sensors, the suspension has other characteristics of all elements, the engine has a different cylinder head, its own power steering pump, its own control system, there are other electronics and climate control in the cabin.

Even the body is radically different: it is smaller, stronger, heavier, and the interior also does not have a single detail in common with the Opel, except for the buttons. The ignition switch here is moved to the central tunnel, as it should be for Swedish cars.

By the way, the Saab 9-3 still has a twin, but it's not Opel, but… Cadillac BLS. The American brand car was assembled in Trollhättan, and not at all in the USA, and technically it repeats Saab one to one.

Otherwise, the 9-3 of the second generation is a more or less typical representative of cars on the GM Epsilon I platform. The body is almost completely steel, only the hood is aluminum. The engine is transverse in front, the units have a row-linear arrangement. The basic drive is front-wheel drive, but there are also all-wheel drive modifications with a Haldex clutch. Body sedan, station wagon and convertible. The latter was assembled separately at the Finnish Valmet plant, and not on the main conveyor. Suspension – front MacPherson strut, rear multi-link suspension is quite a simple scheme.

The motors in this generation are all jointly developed with Opel, nothing has been preserved from the old line. But it was Saab specialists who were the developers of the turbocharging system for 2.0 and 2.8 engines, so the “stuffing” is not entirely alien. But the quality of the coloring was far from ideal. The paintwork in this generation is quite delicate, prone to chipping, and in the first years of production it also loses its shine over time, requiring polishing and applying a new layer of varnish on some color options.

Closer to restyling, the quality of painting has become more stable, but in most cases, one can only hope for a native paintwork without touch-ups and in good condition by choosing cars of 2008-2011. Older cars have near-zero chances of this, unless it's a time capsule with garage storage and hundreds of thousands of miles. Very late cars of the bankruptcy period are unpredictable – they spent many months in a semi-assembled state, and the technological chains were broken randomly.

The main sore point of the body is the rear body arches and the rear wing at the junction with the bumper. Thresholds suffer mainly due to a puncture with a fastening of the lining in the opening of the driver's and passenger's doors, rotting under the plastic from above. At the bottom of the threshold, corrosion mainly develops under the plastic lining in the back near the rear arch when it is depressurized. The front arches are usually intact, and small chips and corrosion are invisible from the outside. On the leading edge of the roof, rust crawls under the upper windshield molding and spreads from there.

The trunk lid rusts slowly and to a greater extent on sedans. But the most common problem, which manifests itself even on cars after restyling, is the corrosion of the internal reinforcement of the upper moldings of window openings – they are bursting, and they leave rusty streaks on the body. On cars before restyling, there are also lower moldings, their attachment points are also a problem area. Chips and scratches are not uncommon around the handles, but usually there is no rust.

Outwardly, even inexpensive cars look good, the main thing is that the rear arches should not be fashioned from putty, and corrosion at problem points should be localized at least by a banal cleaning and touch-up. It is difficult to find a really dead copy, there are not so many of these cars lately, but there are still enough spare parts, including body parts, with a margin.

Bottom

A closer inspection on the lift is unlikely to give much cause for concern. The main part of the bottom is well covered with a layer of mastic, and there is no rust on it, except that the edges of the plugs may already begin to rust. There is surface rust on the sides of the gas tank – there is a small indentation that has not been treated with mastic from the factory, and a bunch of tubes and indentations for the mounting brackets for the trailing arm of the rear suspension and subframe. As a result, ventilation is poorer and there is no protection, so surface rust is usually present, but perforation is rare. Even in the rear arches, the seams and holes are usually intact.

The main problem is the seam between the wing and the inner arch, it rusts from the edge and from the inside due to poor ventilation of the narrow cavity to the threshold (if it is not regularly shed with anticorrosive), and the front wall of the arch. The seams of the rear panel of the body rot around the perimeter – not terrible, but unpleasant.

Among the cars of the first releases, you can already find instances in which you can see the ground from the trunk. About the rzhu under the internal seal of the trunk opening, I have already said above, inside the trunk the problem is presented much more noticeably and wider. If on the outside it is a small drip and swelling of the paint, then from the inside there are already loose growths over most of the length of the lower joint of the panels under the seal. The side niches of the trunk also rust, but there are almost no serious problems, unless there is water here due to damage to the seals.

In the front arches, as well as outside, there is usually order, except that the inner edge of the wing is gradually corroding due to the features of the locker attachment, and the mud pocket in the mudguard area collects dirt, but there is usually no rust even on cars before restyling, if only from non-factory mudguard fasteners.

In the engine compartment, everything is usually fine, even the cheapest cars have glasses intact, their seams should be factory, a little surface rust on the shelves of the mudguards, where dirt collects, and on the beam under the bumper. This “soft-touch” peels off, leaving gray and white bald spots.

A lot of little things can break – handles, locks and more. A broken butterfly cup holder can “shoot back” instead of opening, the latches and locks of the armrest and glove box can play and knock, and the rear seat back lock sensor (by the way, a unique option) is simply broken, closing the backs with a “blow”. Most of the problems are related to the operation of the electrics of the machine and will be described below.

The climate is successful: unlike the older brother 9-5 of the first generation, here it does not break in terms of dampers, and unlike the Vectra C, the control unit and its buttons do not break here. Occasionally, the fan speed controller and the fan itself fail, but this is more likely with runs under 300 thousand. But the compressor serves 200 thousand – there is a unit with adjustable volumetric productivity, without a clutch and with a valve, and this design has a working stroke even in winter in frosts under -30. That does not contribute to the conservation of the resource. If you buy used, then you will have to change much more often, because the residual resource is usually small.

Electrician

Any Saab 9-3 II buyer should remember at least a few magic phrases. Trionic 8, CIM module, ignition switch module, REC module and BCM module. You can not particularly remember about the wiring, except that the corrugations of the trunk and doors need to be checked, and the engine compartment wiring is usually in good condition. The generator is not eternal, but up to 150-200 thousand it does not cause much trouble, earlier only the overrunning clutch is rented, then – as lucky.

But the headache is just those blocks whose names are listed at the beginning. The most expensive problem at the moment is, in fact, the Trionic engine control unit. It is located directly on the motor and gets very hot, as a result, for the luckiest, it serves somewhere around 300-350 thousand kilometers, and often fails much earlier. Strange misfires, injector failures, sensor failures, CAN bus failures – these are all his tricks.

Front wing

32 526 conventional units

You can replace the block with a new one, this is about 50 thousand conventional units plus firmware and a mandatory resistor for the bus. However, there are almost no dealers where they can upload the factory firmware due to the disappearance of the brand as such. You will have to look for a few craftsmen who can pull out the factory firmware of the block using real Tex2, restore the firmware of the old block and upload it to the new one. If you put a used block, then again only with craftsmen – sometimes you come across restored blocks, sometimes just fresh ones. Recovery is not always successful, because soldering is complicated, and blocks can sometimes work for a few months, and the price of such a restoration is up to half the price of a new block. In general, there is always a risk.

There are two ways to reduce it: by transferring the control unit from the motor to the front panel or by installing it in a special casing that isolates the unit from engine heat. In the first case, you need to extend the three wires in the connector block and make a new ground contact – by and large, it's easy. The second option does not require intervention in the wiring. At the same time, such a misfortune as getting antifreeze on the ECU connectors is excluded – a tee of the cooling system is located nearby, and it sometimes flows. Along with the ECU unit, you need to change the ionization unit – here it plays the role of knock control in the engine and is rigidly tied to the version of the Trionic unit. When replacing a block with a new one, this block is also updated without fail. By the way, the ionization unit itself serves as a regular irritant for the owner, if the candles are not changed regularly, then the coils and the ionization unit become a consumable.

The CIM module is basically a headache for owners of first-generation machines, after 2005 the problem is almost non-existent, breakdowns of such blocks happen an order of magnitude less often. The module is responsible for, among other things, steering column lock, key binding, car start, steering wheel position sensor and instrument panel operation. On later cars, the CIM module is more reliable, but several more modules give out a similar set of problems: the BCM unit, the ignition key module and the steering column lock unit. All this is sewn and changed, and even the prices in the last few years have not been very high, the average repair is less than 10-15 thousand conventional units. But it's still too much trouble. Specialized services recommend preventive cleaning of the contacts of the ignition key module and the removal of “extra” elements such as the steering column lock module.

Another problem of the 9-3 release right up to 2008 is related to the fact that the REC module dies, sometimes it pulls the BCM along with it. REC is a rear power distribution hub, and in the event of a complete breakdown, the car will not start: there will be no power to the fuel pump. But in most cases, the situation is simpler – the wrong rear lights are on (or vice versa).

And the reason is in the license plate backlight module: its contacts close to the body, and a composite transistor in the power circuit explodes in the block. It explodes in very different ways, sometimes outwardly the problem can be seen only by the fact that the “feet” are constantly lit, and sometimes the car is not going anywhere. But the replacement of the block here is only with firmware, so it's easier to replace the transistor assembly and the burnt harness.

The ABS block is also not very successful, it suffers from soldering dumps. On cars before restyling in 2008, this happens often and there is a shortage of serviceable blocks, and repairs are difficult – the soldering here is very thin, unlike older versions. Installation of newer ABS units is possible, but requires intervention in the wiring and installation of a new unit connector.

Subtotal

The car as a whole was lucky with the quality of the metal, so if you come across a rotten copy, feel free to cut it off – there will be much more intact ones. Unless it's a rare convertible or station wagon in our area, which you definitely need… It will not be easy for perfectionists with 9-3, there are a lot of breaking small things both outside and inside in the cabin, which also frustrates with the low quality of finishing materials. The electrics are already quite complex and capable of drinking a lot of blood, which is aggravated by the lack of official dealers of the brand, the total binding of blocks to each other and the impossibility of replacing them “in the garage”. In the next part, we will study the chassis, transmission and motors.

Buying a used car of an already defunct brand seems to be a serious adventure.
