The African Almera has only two front airbags, ABS and a driver's seat belt indicator. The Mazda2 for the African market differs from the Almera in terms of equipment only in that it offers a front passenger seat belt indicator.

Global NCAP has a tight budget for Africa, so testing is reduced to a single frontal crash test at 64 km/h against a deformable barrier set at 40% offset on the driver's side. Old sprockets are issued separately for adult motorcyclists and separately for children (in a crash test, small dummies in the back seat imitate 1.5-year-old and 3-year-old children, both sitting in special child seats).

Mazda2

The Mazda2 performed well overall in the crash test and received 4 stars for adult protection, the dummy's sensors did not pick up dangerous loads, but the back of the driver's seat broke from the impact and put extra stress on the driver rearwards on impact, and nearly caught up with him when he bounced off the head of a mannequin sitting in the back seat. The body structure turned out to be stable, but the deformation in the floor area was too strong, this part turned out to be unstable.

Nissan Almera

The Nissan Almera received 3 stars for adult protection, with stresses of the orange border layer on the driver's chest, knees and thighs threatening bruises and fractures. The protection of the driver's right knee and thigh is considered unsatisfactory (hazard level red) due to the high risk of contact with the rigid internal structure of the instrument panel. In addition, the driver's seat partially fell off the sled and “walked” around the cabin with the driver, creating additional stress and danger. The video shows how the left side of the chair “went” and the chair turned towards the door. Almera's body structure (including floor area) found to be unstable; it will not protect against new blows in a multi-stage crash.

Nissan Almera

For child protection, both cars received three stars due to poor labeling of mountings and the inability to disable the passenger airbag to install a child seat in its place. In addition, Mazda recorded high loads (brown color levels) on the chest of a doll imitating a 3-year-old child.

The Global NCAP committee has already notified Mazda and Nissan of seat attachment defects and called for immediate action, but we doubt this will end in recall campaigns.

The NCAP Global Committee has released test results for two subcompact models for the South African market, Mazda2 and Nissan Almera, both showing signs of damage to the driver’s seat after impact.
