In the post-war years, the country massively needed off-road vehicles. The scope of such vehicles ranged from military needs to agriculture.<\/p>\n

Veterans GAZ-67, Willys MB continued to work in all these industries, a more comfortable GAZ-69 appeared a little later. But still, it's time for a new off-road vehicle.<\/p>\n

It was in the 50s that the development<\/a> of an off-road vehicle by the MZMA (AZLK) plant began. A light, compact, frame SUV built on components and assemblies of its own production.<\/p>\n

Since the mid-50s, a lot of cars with a 4×4 wheel arrangement have been created. These are GAZ-M72, Moskvich-410, Moskvich-411. All these cars had a lot in common, they were created on the basis of mass-produced cars, with a monocoque body, which received local reinforcements and nothing more.<\/p>\n

During operation, it became clear that they were not suitable for the task<\/a>s that were set for these SUVs. There were many breakdowns in the unit, which were responsible for the off-road complex. Handouts and bridges broke.<\/p>\n

The conclusion was obvious, a specialized all-wheel drive off-road vehicle cannot be created on the components and assemblies of a passenger car. GAZ continued to work on improving existing models. But AZLK went its own way, they created an SUV from scratch.<\/p>\n

It was then that a project called Moskvich 415 was born. In terms of its main components and assemblies, the SUV was unified by Moskvich 410, such as a transfer<\/a> case, axles and gearbox. Naturally redesigned for the needs of an SUV. It was planned to install a new 45 hp engine under the hood.<\/p>\n

The front axle was suspended on six six-leaf springs, the rear axle was suspended on nine-leaf springs. The frame and body were created completely new. As a result, the Moskvich 415 received almost phenomenal geometric cross-country ability, the overhangs were minimal, the short base was 2030 mm, and the ground clearance was 220 mm.<\/p>\n

The first tests of the new SUV took place in the spring of 1959, the second in the summer and autumn. Moskvich 415 during the tests covered seven thousand kilometers on asphalt, the same kilometers on cobblestones, over seven thousand kilometers along a country road and two thousand in the city. The proportions of the test mileage were as close as possible to the conditions in which it was planned to use the SUV.<\/p>\n

Cars were allowed into such swamps, swamps and gullies into which even now not a single owner of an unprepared SUV would climb for any money. The SUV showed a good, at that time, consumption, from 10 to 19 liters, depending on the operating conditions.<\/p>\n

If the SUV had no complaints in terms of off-roading, then during the tests, it became clear that the 45 horsepower engine was working at its limit, there were also complaints about the clutch.<\/p>\n

The first SUV Moskvich 415 rolled off the assembly line in 1959. Taking into account all the problems that got out during the test.<\/p>\n

But then it arrived from where they did not expect. The designers were threatened with a finger, because of the lack of ideas regarding the design. All the same, there was a lot in it from Willis (to be fair, it should be noted, like almost all SUVs in the world at that time). As the saying goes, “the party said it's necessary – the designers answered, yes,” as a result, the SUV received a completely new design. Two new modifications Moskvich 415 with an open body and Moskvich 416 with a closed one were presented.<\/p>\n

The SUV retained the same 45 hp engine under the hood, but received a new four-speed gearbox (instead of three speed) and new axles.<\/p>\n

Based on the results of new tests, the Ministry of Defense issued a positive verdict, the SUV was recommended for use in the army. He also had to go into agriculture. In November 1959, the government approved the launch of this model in a series. The SUV was planned to be produced at the Novosibirsk Sibselmash, but in February 1960, production was suspended, as a result of contradictions between services and departments.<\/p>\n

In fact, the history of this SUV ended there. Several times the plant tried to resume production, but the party was no longer interested in the project. AZLK in the 70-80s tried to revive the model, by the way, work on which continued all this time, even despite the lack of interest from the government, but this attempt also failed.<\/p>\n

So we did not see a full-fledged birth, a potentially very promising Soviet SUV, which at that time, in terms of its off-road characteristics, was head and shoulders above all competitors.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
