And this model is attractive to me in the first place by some mystery: I knew almost nothing about Isuzu cars. After all, we have much more common trucks and buses of this brand.

In general, the Isuzu brand is the oldest automobile company in Japan, which has been operating since 1916. Its main specialization is the production of trucks. But from time to time this manufacturer pleases the world public with reliable models of SUVs and pickups.

The test car is the second generation of the model (produced since 2012), which has already been restyled in 2015. In general, the Isuzu brand in the passenger segment is considered very viable, and in some markets it is respected even more than Toyota. By the way, this Japanese automaker also owns a small stake in Isuzu.

It is worth saying that at a certain time, the Americans from General Motors owned part of the shares of Isuzu. The result of the collaboration was the twin brothers of the pickup presented on the test – Chevrolet and Holden Colorado, which are sold in the US and Australia. They have exactly the same frame, body and suspension. The difference lies only in the engines, interior and exterior design.

And yes, the second D-Max has just “arrived” in us, but the manufacturer has already shown a completely new third generation of the model. But that car, compared to the test car, is a completely different dimension.

Too lazy to read? Watch the Isuzu D-Max pickup video test:

Appearance

In my opinion, the design of the D-Max is clearly not its forte. It is too obvious that it was drawn primarily for Asia. Other Japanese competitors (like Toyota Hilux and Mitsubishi L200) look more “European”.

On the test, we have a car in the maximum configuration LS Plus. But even in this configuration, the headlights are not equipped with xenon lamps – lenses with conventional lamps are installed here, as well as diode DRLs. So this optics is not very efficient.

But in the top configuration, 18-inch wheels with a beautiful pattern are available. But the steps are already installed here as an additional equipment. Despite the fact that there are almost no such pickups in our country, the Isuzu D-Max is very popular in other markets, so there are almost limitless possibilities for tuning and improvements, and the choice of accessories is simply enormous.

Pricing

D-Max is brought to our country with only one engine – this is a diesel unit with a volume of 1.9 liters, which is equipped with a turbine. In base trim with a manual transmission, the D-Max costs $29,300. The version with an automatic transmission will cost the buyer almost 37 thousand dollars. The same amount is asked for the Toyota Hilux, and the new L200 is even cheaper. So the main task of our test will be to find such features of this pickup that could justify such a high price. Or to state the fact that there really are no reasons for such numbers in the price list.

Engine, dynamics and braking performance

Hidden under a heavy hood with a large soundproofing element is a 1.9-liter RZ4E turbodiesel engine, it produces 163 hp. with. and 360 Nm of torque. With such a volume, this return can be considered average for the class. For Isuzu, this is a relatively new engine, which was intended specifically for the D-Max model just after the 2015 restyling, especially for the European market. But in other markets, this pickup is delivered mainly with a 2.5 liter engine. In the new generation, they already offer a 3.0-liter diesel engine.

It is important to understand that this vehicle was designed by people who specialize in trucks and do their job well. But competitors are produced by car manufacturers. For the Isuzu D-Max, this design school has both its pros and cons. Of course, the main advantages will be its endurance and reliability. Many note not only the huge resource of the motor, but also the reliability of the suspension and gearbox. Let me remind you that a six-speed torque converter from Aisin is installed here, which is a reference in terms of durability. The same automatic transmission was installed on the Prado and 4Runner models.

The design of the engine compartment seems quite simple, with an eye to good maintainability. A capacitive battery of 80 Ah is installed here. There is enough space to install additional equipment (for example, a compressor, which is useful on serious off-road tires). The service interval in this car is 20 thousand kilometers, as in trucks.

The Isuzu D-Max is made in Thailand (as are many pickup trucks popular in Asia, including the Hilux and L200). But engines for Isuzu are supplied from Japan. And from the point of view of return, specifically, our power plant loses to competitors, at least on paper. All top configurations of direct competitors in our market are offered with significantly more powerful engines, and it's not just about volume. The Isuzu engine is even a little weaker than the basic versions of competitors' engines. True, if stock power is not enough for you, you can always chip the engine. When flashing to Stage 1, you will receive 200 hp. with. and 438 Nm of torque.

During acceleration, there is a serious slip of the unloaded rear axle in monodrive mode. At the same time, the sound of the engine is not annoying, and the car picks up a “hundred” quite quickly. As a result, we accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 11.9 seconds. Of course, this cannot be compared with the overclocking of the Volkswagen Amarok V6, but this result can be considered better than the average by the standards of the class. For example, Toyota Hilux with an old 2.8 engine was able to accelerate to “hundreds” in 12.8 seconds, and Mitsubishi L200 with a 2.4 engine in 11.3 seconds.

As for the braking efficiency, it is immediately necessary to clarify – the rear mechanisms are drum-type here (which, however, is more practical on impassable roads). Let me remind you that a satisfactory indicator in terms of safety is 40 m when braking from a speed of 100 km / h to 0. Isuzu showed an absolute anti-record compared to all the cars we tested earlier – 49 m. And yes, if we consider it as a truck, then the result is not seems like such a failure. On the other hand, if you consider that there may be a ton of cargo in the back… In a word, while driving, you should always remember that the D-Max is not a record holder in terms of slowing down.

Body

The luggage compartment is no different. There is a lock on the lid, which is good, but there is no body lighting. The dimensions of the loading platform are comparable to those of classmates: the width along the sides, excluding arches, is 1.53 m, the length is 1.55 m, the height of the sides is 46 cm. The distance between the arches is quite standard for the class – 110 cm, and the euro pallet will not fit across only in the body of the Volkswagen Amarok).

The body metal from the factory is not covered by anything. A plastic box or rubber coating is not offered as an option, so you will have to buy additionally. The opening lid looks a bit unreliable. According to the manufacturer, it can withstand up to 150 kg, but I think that when loading something really heavy, it is better to be careful with it.

The carrying capacity of this vehicle is one ton. A very good indicator, in this class it is the maximum. For example, only the Ford Ranger can boast of the same, the L200 takes on board up to 950 kg, but the Toyota Hilux can handle 250 kg less.

Salon

It is immediately noticeable that D-Max is outdated in terms of interior design. Plastic is hard everywhere, but for pickups, this solution is considered the norm. On the other hand, for the top configuration, I would still like more soft finishing materials.

In the cabin, only a leather-wrapped steering wheel, soft upholstery of the upper part of the instrument panel visor and a soft insert in the front panel opposite the front passenger can be called “more expensive solutions”. It is convenient that there are two glove compartments. There is a 12-volt outlet in the glove box that works regardless of the ignition being turned on. Plastics in the cabin fit well. At the same time, they do not creak while driving, which means that everything is assembled really neatly (the test car has already driven 10 thousand km).

The multimedia system has a touch screen. The menus and functionality of the system are outdated. The picture on the screen looks primitive, but the sensor responds willingly to pressing, while emitting an old-fashioned squeak. Conveniently, there are two USB ports. The front row is equipped with heated seats.

Our top-of-the-line equipment seems a little strange. For example, there is no automatic transition from high beam to low beam, but there are many security systems. Already in the base, for example, the car is equipped with six airbags, assistants when descending and starting off on an ascent, there are also ESP and ABS systems.

The instrument panel is equipped with a color display. In addition to the usual information on the dashboard, there is a separately displayed particulate filter full indicator. The driver can clearly control the moment when the particulate filter needs to be burned. Not every car with a diesel engine provides this opportunity. Such a decision once again confirms that this pickup was made by specialists in the production of trucks.

The steering wheel is height adjustable only. And although the chair is equipped with an electric drive, the range of its adjustments is not enough for me. The central armrest is trimmed with practical leatherette. There is a large niche under the armrest cover. But for people of average height, it will be inconvenient to use the armrest, because it is too far back. The climate control is single-zone, and it is quite convenient to control the temperature settings and the direction of the air flow. Although, of course, for 37 thousand dollars I would like a “climate” with two zones, but such an option for a pickup truck is not offered at all.

If we compare the space in the cabin with competitors, then there is more space inside than in the same Mitsubishi L200 and Toyota Hilux. With a height of 193 cm, I do not rest my head on the ceiling. In the back row, everything is also good: I can safely sit down behind myself. Yes, the back of the second row is more upright than we would like, but for pickups this is the norm. At the same time, the seats are comfortable and soft, and the door cards have a pleasant upholstery. There is also a reclining armrest in the back of the seat, two cup holders at the bottom and another USB port for recharging gadgets. For small things, niches are provided behind the back of the sofa.

Summing up the cabin, I will say that the Isuzu D-Max is still inferior to the top versions of its competitors. On the other hand, everything in the cabin is quite simple, but at the same time reliable, practical and sound in terms of assembly.

Competitors

Mitsubishi L200. The maximum configuration of the Mitsubishi L200 will cost the buyer $1,000 less. But for this money, the pickup is equipped with a 2.4-liter diesel engine with 181 hp and 430 Nm (paired with a six-speed automatic transmission). Of the obvious advantages – the presence of diode head optics in Mitsubishi. There is also wireless access.

But the main thing here is inside. Yes, the plastics are hard and there is a feeling that there is less space in the cabin. But in terms of ergonomics, the L200 is much better. The selection of materials, color combinations and the implementation of all controls in this pickup are made in a completely different spirit: it seems that there is a gap of ten years between the D-Max and L200. In the configuration for the specified amount there is a large display, but with a full-fledged multimedia system; you can use Android Auto or Apple Carplay.

There is a heated steering wheel and (not the most useful) paddle shifters. Due to the greater range of seat adjustments, it is much easier to get comfortable behind the wheel in the L200. The steering wheel is also adjustable for reach. Of course, this pickup truck is still far from the reference VW Amarok, but still in the Mitsubishi L200 cabin it seems that here you simply respect yourself more, and the money was well spent.

But in the back row in Mitsubishi there is a lack of headroom with the same backrest angle. For second-row passengers, two USB ports and a center armrest are available.

Toyota Hilux. This pickup truck is expecting a restyling in the near future (at the time of writing the test, now it is already on our market – InfoCar.ua), so the outgoing version is sold at a discount. The base version will set you back $28,300 and is very similar in content to the base D-Max. True, Toyota even offers a locking rear differential as standard. In the cabin, as I said, there is less space than in Isuzu. The plastic is also hard, but visually the Toyota's interior looks more solid than the Isuzu's. Underbody protection in the Hilux is not bad – the transfer case and engine crankcase are securely covered with metal, and the fuel tank is hidden behind hard plastic.

The basic version of the Isuzu D-Max has a bumper unpainted in body color. In some cases, this solution is more practical. There are no fog lights, the door handles are just black, no chrome, and there is no keyless entry system. But in Isuzu, even in the basic version, there are 6 airbags and safety head restraints, there are also all the electronic systems and assistants that I listed in the maximum configuration.

The main differences are inside. In the cabin of the basic D-Max, there is even less sense of high cost. A seat without an electric drive, but with a large adjustment range, a steering wheel without a braid and radio control buttons. There is also no color display on the instrument panel. But unlike the basic Hilux, where the radio is not offered, there is already an audio system here. Instead of climate control – only air conditioning.

Drive

In terms of road handling and ride quality, the D-Max does not disappoint. Of course, so far none of the Japanese pickups can compare with the Amarok in terms of road performance on asphalt. But Isuzu can give odds to some other Japanese pickups.

Firstly, the steering wheel is filled with sufficient weight. At the same time, the connection is weakly expressed, since this is still a frame car. But due to this heaviness, the car seems to be more manageable on a good road (in this regard, the D-Max performs better than the L200 or the pre-styling Hilux). On the other hand, in the city, with unhurried movement, a heavy steering wheel creates certain inconveniences.

The motor doesn't lag either. At first it may seem that the volume of 1.9 liters and the power of 163 liters. with. not enough. But the feeling of lack of traction, torque or dynamics does not arise at all. And even vice versa, but because of the rolled suspension and rolls, it is better not to overdo it. And the car keeps the maximum speed well, and it is one of the highest in the class in Isuzu – 180 km / h. True, if you have already decided to drive at such a speed, you must always remember about the extremely inefficient braking system. I also note that the cabin is relatively quiet. And the point here is not in advanced sound insulation, but in how the frame itself and its attachments to the body are worked out.

On a good road, the car behaves nicely, but if you move around with an empty body, the leaf spring suspension makes the pickup bounce. But as soon as you find yourself on the road with poor coverage, there is a feeling of incredible energy intensity and permissiveness, which I have only seen on the Ranger Raptor. In such an element, the suspension is impenetrable, and it doesn't matter at what speed you move.

The weak point of this chassis is the average roughness of the asphalt. Just here the car does not behave very comfortably, and Toyota and Mitsubishi have the opportunity to recoup. As a result, the handling of the Isuzu D-Max within the class feels great on roads with very poor coverage. But on the streets of the city, the chassis is better tuned for the L200 and Hilux. Well, Volkswagen Amarok for all these cars is still an unattainable level.

Fuel consumption during the test averaged about 10 l/100 km. With a similar ride, competitors consume an average of 2 l / 100 km more. As a result, D-Max can be called quite economical, while in terms of dynamics it is not worse than competitors.

Off-road behavior

Under the bottom of the car looks perfectly prepared for off-road conquest. For example, I have not seen such powerful front levers for a long time. Rear suspension – leaf spring, three sheets on each side. Even in the basic configuration, a metal protection covering the engine is installed from the factory. At the same time, the box is not covered by anything, but it is located high, so the probability of hooking it is minimal. The transfer case is also protected, and the fuel tank, unlike the Hilux, is covered with aluminum protection, not plastic. All highways are either securely covered or tucked deep into a really massive frame (which has an ‘old school' feel to it).

The Part-Time all-wheel drive system in the D-Max does not provide options with differentials, like the Mitsubishi L200. Here, you either ride in rear-wheel drive, or you can hook up front-wheel drive via an electronically controlled transfer case. There is no locking rear differential here even in the maximum configuration. Such a solution for many can become a significant problem when using a car on a real off-road (many competitors already offer blocking in the “base”). The level of the ford to be overcome is 60 cm according to the passport.

As for the actual cross-country driving, the first thing I want to note is the excellent setting of the accelerator pedal. Traction is easy to control, and this is very important when driving off-road. Downhill on the sand, the pickup rides more than confidently, but Isuzu was unable to drive through a difficult section where diagonal hanging takes place. The rear wheel, which was on the ground, did not want to cling to the coating, and what was hung out, scrolled helplessly in the air.

It is in such cases that it is necessary to have a differential lock. And if you feel that you will still use such a pickup truck off public roads, it is possible to put a lock from a third-party manufacturer, since there is an opportunity to choose from several options.

findings

It is important to remind once again that the test is a car of the outgoing generation. And the new pickup should be a cut above. Therefore, I have no questions about the Isuzu brand about how our pickup truck looks inside and out. But there is a question about pricing. Why does the outgoing generation of D-Max even cost a little more than a brand new L200?

In this review, the main task was to find arguments that would justify the high price of this car, especially against the backdrop of newer and more established competitors. But in the process of this search, we found a number of certain shortcomings: cabin ergonomics, strange equipment and the absence of some off-road attributes. On the other hand, this car has its advantages. Among which are the best carrying capacity, (probably) a resource engine, normal handling in the city and quite stable on the highway. Against the background of other Japanese pickups, there are certain driving sensations here, as well as the “impenetrability” of the suspension on surfaces where others are already having a hard time.

But I do not find convincing arguments for choosing D-Max over competitors. That is, in order to buy an Isuzu D-max and put up with its shortcomings compared to the L200 or Hilux, there must be a significant difference in price. It's a good car, but it should cost between $2,000 and $4,000 less. At least so that the buyer can install the missing elements here for this money (for example, the same rear blocking). Or just keep this money for yourself and feel that you bought a really reliable Japanese car at the right price.

The Isuzu D-Max pickup truck began to be delivered to our country relatively recently.
