One of the main markets for the Prius remains the States, despite the fact that sales of the family have been declining here since 2013. So, during the “covid” 2020, dealers sold 43,525 cars, which is 37.6% less than a year earlier. For comparison, back in 2012, the model sold 236,655 units. This year, Toyota Prius figures in the US have grown, with customers buying 48,821 units between January and August, up 69.6% from the first eight months of 2020.

In the photo: the current hybrid Toyota Prius

The presentation of the fifth-generation Toyota Prius hybrid is scheduled for December 2022. The model, as now, will have both the usual petrol-electric modification and the PHV version (that is, rechargeable from the network). However, according to the Japanese edition of Best Car, the family may also be replenished with a version that will be equipped with a hydrogen engine. According to preliminary data, such a Prius will appear in 2025.

The principle of the new version of the Prius is likely to be that hydrogen will be burned in a conventional internal combustion engine, unlike, for example, the Mirai sedan, which uses hydrogen in fuel cells. Toyota already has experience with such a power plant: this spring, the Corolla Sport was introduced, equipped with a 1.6-liter hydrogen “turbo engine”. According to the publication, in a few years, the Prius may borrow this particular version of the “stuffing”.

So far, there is no official information about the “technology” of fifth-generation Toyota Prius hybrid variants. It is expected that the system will be different, but, like the current one, it will be based on a 1.8-liter “aspirated” (it will work in tandem with an electric motor).

Recall that now the power plant of both the “regular” Prius hybrid and the rechargeable version of the Prius PHV includes a 1.8 2ZR-FXE engine, its return is 98 hp, and the maximum torque is 142 Nm. The kit comes with a 72-horsepower electric motor (163 Nm). At the same time, the “simple” hybrid has an all-wheel drive version of the E-Four: such cars also received a 7.2-horsepower electric motor on the rear axle (55 Nm). And the PHV version also has a 31-horsepower motor-generator (40 Nm), which is connected during fast acceleration.

Each version has its own battery option. So, the “regular” hybrid Prius was equipped with a lithium-ion version with a capacity of 0.75 kWh, the “all-wheel drive” E-Four is equipped with a nickel-metal hydride version of 1.2 kWh, well, the Prius PHV modification got a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 8.8 kWh

In the US market, the current version of the “regular” Prius costs $24,525 (equivalent to about 1.79 million conventional units at the current exchange rate), and a rechargeable hybrid will cost at least $28,220 (about 2.05 million conventional units). Recently, the model was present in the model range of the brand, but due to modest demand, it left our market back in 2017.

The Japanese company is preparing to introduce the next generation model at the end of 2022, and a modification with a hydrogen internal combustion engine will most likely appear in 2025.
