This is the second of three planned Audi concept cars that share a “spherical” theme. The Audi Skysphere roadster was shown first in August, and now we have an electric sedan that is design<\/a>ed to show in which direction the evolution of the Audi A8 model will go. And it's not just about the design, although the Grandsphere is strikingly different from the company's current models.<\/p>\n

\"Audi<\/a><\/p>\n

In terms of length (5350 mm), width (2000 mm) and wheelbase (3190 mm), the new concept, albeit slightly, still surpasses the long version of the current “a-eighth”. And the height of the car is “compartment” 1390 mm. The sedan has wheels with a diameter of 23 inches, the rear doors swing open against the move, while the body is devoid of B-pillars.<\/p>\n

But the most curious find of the chief designer Mark Lichte is the glass doors, which consist of two parts. Their upper sectors seem to be “curved” onto the roof, making the car visually even lower. Moreover, it is stated that such a solution will soon appear on production cars!<\/p>\n

Yet the Grandsphere sedan is built around the interior. Its developers compare it with the first-class cabin in an airliner, and the main places here are not the rear, but the front seats. After all, the concept has a fourth-level autopilot, and there is no need for a hired driver, so the owner can drive in front himself, and use the back row as a “spare”.<\/p>\n

The front seats have a lot of adjustments, and with the autopilot turned on, the backrests can be folded 60 degrees back and reclining places can be arranged. Between the seats are cup holders and a cooled niche for a bottle. The decoration used wood, metal, wool and artificial fabric, as well as recycled materials, but there is no natural leather.<\/p>\n

And there are no large LCD screens. Instead, there is a projection on the wooden surface of the front panel and on the windshield. Sensor inserts are made to control on-board systems, but this can also be done with voice, gestures and even a glance: the electronics track the position of the driver's eyes. The steering wheel and pedals in autopilot mode retract inside the front panel.<\/p>\n

As for technology, the Audi Grandsphere sedan is built on the promising PPE (Premium Platform Electric) modular platform, which Volkswagen is developing without reference to existing cars and will be used for large and expensive electric vehicles. The concept has an active air suspension with electromechanical actuators that can individually control each wheel based on data from the front camera. And here is a fully controlled chassis.<\/p>\n

The traction battery located under the floor has a capacity of 120 kWh, the electrical system operates at 800 volts, and the charger supports power up to 270 kW. When connected to such a DC terminal, the battery can be charged from 5% to 80% in 25 minutes. Claimed mileage on a single charge is 750 km. Two electric motors (one on each axle) produce 720 hp. and 960 Nm, it takes about four seconds for the sedan to accelerate to “hundreds”. The maximum speed is limited – according to the official version, in order to increase the range, and the company did not indicate the value.<\/p>\n

Audi Grandsphere will be shown live at the upcoming IAA exhibition in Munich. And Audi has already begun to create a third thematic concept – the urban electric car Urbansphere, but it will appear only in 2022.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
