If we have long been accustomed to ABS, ESP and TSC systems and understand the principle of their operation, then ADAS technologies raise many questions. What is it, why are they needed, why have they been paying so much attention lately?

I propose to get to know ADAS better using the example of Hyundai / Kia Motors cars, which have recently made great progress in this direction.

So, ADAS technologies or Advanced Driver Assistance System, this is the general designation of modern driver assistance systems. And their main, but not the only purpose is security. Conditionally applied systems can be divided into two types: on the one hand, the technology works to prevent accidents, supplementing the driver's attention with its safety features, on the other hand, they reduce fatigue and fatigue while driving. But in order to make the best use of them, it is important to understand the underlying mechanism by which the technology functions.

At present, three main technologies are actively used in new Hyundai / Kia models:

SCC (Smart Cruise Control)

NSCC (Navigation Based Smart Cruise Control)

HDA (Assist Driving Assist)

Let's consider them in detail.

SCC — Smart Cruise Control

SCC – intelligent cruise control maintains the set speed and distance, reducing driver fatigue on long journeys. Cruise control is not a new technology and has long been known to motorists. But he had one drawback, when a slow car appeared in front, the driver had to press the brake pedal, which in turn turned off the cruise control mode. When driving on desert roads, this function worked well enough, but in heavy traffic it was of little use. But it's a new time and new technologies. Now Smart Cruise Control maintains not only the set speed, but also the distance to the vehicle in front. If we catch up with a slower vehicle, the system regulates the speed and returns to the set speed only after the vehicle in front disappears from the radar sensor.

SCC Stop & Go

More advanced SCC technology. The difference is that if the vehicle in front comes to a complete stop, the system will not only signal and turn off the SCC function, it will stop the vehicle itself, and vice versa will continue to move when the sensors detect that the previous vehicle is moving. This feature is extremely useful during traffic jams when the driver has to stop and go repeatedly. But it is configured so that it turns off at stops for more than three seconds, and starts again after pressing the gas pedal. This is done so that the driver does not lose control, for example at intersections.

NSCC – navigational Smart Cruise Control

An even more advanced driver assistance system that not only recognizes surrounding vehicles, but also uses navigational information about the road. It can work in three ways:

automatically sets the cruising speed at the maximum speed limit of the road on which the vehicle is traveling. We drove into the area of the sign of the settlement, the speed will be automatically reduced.

a safe zone feature that reduces driving speed when the vehicle is in a speed limit zone, such as during road repairs.

Curve curve feature (NSCC-C) that slightly reduces cruising speed in anticipation of a road bend or turn

The essence of the function is to ensure security. Using the navigation map data, NSCC-C calculates the appropriate level of speed reduction given the current vehicle speed and the turn radius in the calculation.

NSCC-R (Ramp)

Another feature that makes cruise control useful even at highway junctions. It uses navigational data to predict the entry into an interchange and adjusts cruising speed accordingly while at it. The speed levels are calculated, again, based on the vehicle's current speed and turning radius. The NSCC-R requires the installation of forward and aft facing radar sensors in addition to the standard forward facing radar.

HDA — Highway Driving Assist

HDA is a semi-autonomous driving technology that combines the key benefits of NSCC and Lane Follow Assist (LFA) to make highway driving much more convenient. HDA uses all available sources of information. Data from the front camera and radar sensor, as well as navigational coordinates. Plus, the lane hold function is included. If SCC Stop & Go is suspended when the vehicle comes to a complete stop for more than three seconds, then HDA is active for almost 30 seconds after coming to a complete stop, relieving the driver from the fatigue of congested roads. The main condition is to control the driver's condition, he must hold the steering wheel, and the system measures the strength of the driver's hands transmitted to the sensors. If you take your hands off the steering wheel, warning signals will sound after 15 seconds,

What can be said in conclusion. Technologies are developing rapidly. Starting with premium cars, they are gradually included in the configuration of the mass segment, becoming affordable for everyone. On the one hand, they are designed to help drivers and provide maximum safety, on the other hand, they make cars even more complex, and therefore more expensive. But progress cannot be stopped, which means we will add new terms SCC, NSCC, HDA and the like to our vocabulary.

Used materials and photos of the portal tech.hyundaimotorgroup.com

Increasingly, in the description of new cars, we see the designation ADAS.
