Acura will revive Integra: the name will be a new premium compact car

A sub-brand of the Japanese company Honda has announced the appearance of new items in the lineup. It will get a familiar name and will appear next year.

Honda produced a car called Integra for a couple of decades: from 1985 to 2006. The model was also sold under the names Acura Integra and Acura RSX. During this time, the model managed to change generations several times and was offered in various body styles: sedan, hatchback, coupe; It was offered with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. In the last fourth generation, the car had only a two-door version, the most powerful “stuffing” of which produced 220 hp. This car needed 6.2 seconds to accelerate from standstill to “hundreds”.

It would seem that the name has long sunk into oblivion, but today Acura reminded of it, announcing the appearance of new items with this name in the brand line. The announcement was made during the annual Monterey Car Week in California, where the sub-brand unveiled a farewell version of its sports car, the Acura NSX Type S.

During the announcement, the silhouette and the name of the future Acura novelty alternately appeared in the sky: such an unusual teaser was created thanks to a hundred drones with flashlights. So far, this presentation has not helped to understand what type of body the new Integra will have. The company limited itself to the phrase that the line will be replenished with a new compact premium car.

Teaser of the new Acura Integra

So far, the company has released only a “standard” teaser of the novelty. It shows only the head optics of the next Integra: one headlight with LED daytime running lights got into the frame, and an imprint of the model name under the lighting equipment is also visible. In addition, a small part of the rim and a “piece” of the radiator grill got into the frame.

Judging by these “puzzles”, the appearance of the car will have a lot in common with the Acura TLX and ILX sedans. This can probably be explained by the Precision Crafted Performance design concept common to all “cars” of the brand, which was introduced in 2016 with the help of the Acura Precision show car.

During the announcement, Acura Vice President John Ikeda stated that “Integra is back.” According to him, the company intends to revive the “driving spirit and DNA of the original.” He also noted that the details and technical characteristics of the novelty will be declassified later: information will appear closer to the launch of the revived car, which is scheduled for 2022.

It should be noted that sales of Acura cars in the US market have been in the red for the past two years. True, in 2019 the negative dynamics is symbolic (less than 1% decline), and in 2020 it can be explained by the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. Over the past year, Americans bought 136,982 copies, which is 13% less than a year earlier. This year there is a “plus”: in January-July, 103,234 cars were sold, which is 49.5% more than in the first seven months of the previous year. The brand line includes crossovers, which are in relatively high demand. One of them – MDX – changed its generation at the end of last year: we talked about this car in more detail earlier.
