Volkswagen promised to release ID.California motorhome based on ID.Buzz
The German company intends to launch the production of motorhomes at a plant in Hannover. The model will appear no earlier than 2025.
The Volkswagen Group continues to invest in the development of green transport. The manufacturer detailed the ambitious plan implemented as part of the strategy, which will see it become the world leader in the number of electric vehicles produced by the middle of this decade. The next stage includes the transformation of the company's European plants and investments for this purpose in the amount of 89 billion euros. The money must be spent within the next four years.
Volkswagen ID.Buzz concept unveiled in 2017
In the relatively near future, the “green” Volkswagen family will be replenished with a new “electric van” – ID.Buzz. Recall that the brand announced a new product at the beginning of 2017: then, at the Detroit Auto Show, the concept of the same name was presented with a single-body body and design elements in the style of the classic VW T1. Earlier last month, it was reported that the business model would debut in early 2022, and production is expected to begin later that year at the Hannover, Germany plant.
The company also announced an all-electric motorhome based on the ID Buzz. It will get its name – ID.California. The name is familiar to us, as VW's lineup includes the small Caddy California camper, the Transporter-based 6.1 California, and the Crafter-based California XXL.

The ID.California camper will be based on the modular MEB platform. An extended version of the step is likely to be used to build a motorhome to allow for maximum interior space. Such an electric car is supposed to be able to make long trips, so it will most likely be equipped with a large battery with a capacity of 111 kWh. It should provide the van not only with sufficient range, but also with energy for all the appliances needed for camping.

It is planned that ID.California will have a retractable roof, which will create space for an additional sleeping area. It is also possible that a mini-kitchen will be installed inside the camper, as well as many “smart” storage compartments will be organized, even using a flat floor.
the appearance of the RV will most likely be slightly different from the standard Buzz ID. As we already reported, compared to the concept, the model, which so far was shown only in camouflage, received more angular body lines, and its proportions were closer to the Volkswagen T7 minivan with an internal combustion engine. According to preliminary data, a front trunk with a volume of about 200 liters will be placed in front of the car. Buyers should be offered both single-engine, rear-wheel-drive and dual-engine, all-wheel-drive options.
The company said that production of the ID.California will begin at the same Hannover plant where production of the ID.Buzz will begin first. It is assumed that the first camper will roll off the assembly line no earlier than 2025, that is, about three years after the “regular” Volkswagen electric van.
Note that Volkswagen also confirmed its intention to begin production of the Audi Q8 e-tron at the Brussels plant in 2026. Also in the same year, the flagship VW Project Trinity will be launched on a new production line in Wolfsburg.
