Blue tinted car windows are a modern trend as a great tuning option!
In recent years, traditional methods of tinting automotive glass have been replaced by more modern and efficient types. Among them, blue tinting is popular, which in professional language is called athermal or “chameleon”. This method allows you to increase light transmission and remove ultraviolet radiation as much as possible.
1 Blue tinted glass – selection criteria
The first thing that is recommended to pay attention to when choosing such a film for tinting is transparency and manufacturer. A high-quality tint has an average degree of transparency and is produced by leading European and American companies, for example, Llumar, Solar. This film has color modulations of various shades. Most often, these films come in two series (ATR and LA from different manufacturers).

The color is due to the presence of a special graphite layer in the composition of the film, due to which the degree of radiation is minimized and the light transmission capacity is increased. Therefore, when choosing a chameleon dye, it is necessary to pay attention to such basic indicators as:
- degree of light transmission;
- manufacturing method (metallized or sprayed);
- manufacturer and warranty;
- operational characteristics (method of gluing, color).
Depending on the manufacturing technology, athermal films differ in the number of polyester layers used. The most commonly recommended transparencies for use on windshields have fewer layers, allowing more light to pass through. This type of tinting (blue, purple and greenish tint) contains several more layers, which makes it seem darker, and its light transmission does not always comply with GOST standards regarding the permissible tinting of the windshield and side windows of a car.
2 Main advantages and disadvantages of the material
Unlike standard methods, blue or athermal tinting does not protect the contents of the cabin from prying eyes, but serves as an additional means of comfort, as it has increased heat resistance. In modern cars, a transparent athermal film with maximum light transmission is glued to ordinary windows, which also serves as additional thermal insulation and improves visibility of the road situation, regardless of weather conditions. That is why more and more motorists tint the car, especially the windshield, in this way.

At a cost, the blue tint is slightly more expensive than other options due to the high cost of production; however, if you are looking for reliable protection from the negative effects of ultraviolet rays and additional thermal insulation, then this shade will be the best option. As already emphasized above, the only drawback of this film is the low degree of dimming and, of course, the high price for some motorists.
Remember that the number of fakes is growing every day, so do not rush to offers to buy a film under the “chameleon” of dubious production at a low price. Chinese film practically does not protect the interior from radiation, domestic films are of good quality, but in practice their durability leaves much to be desired. These films can be used, for example, to tint car headlights, which is also popular with various tuning enthusiasts; It is not recommended to use a low-quality film with non-thermal properties for tinting a windshield.
3 Self-tinting windshield with athermal film
You can stick the film on the side and windshields of the car with your own hands, the technology is almost the same as when tinting with a conventional film. The blue film is glued to the inside of the car windows. This is necessary to ensure greater durability of the coating and additional protection for the driver and passenger from windshield fragments that are contained in the film in the event of an impact.
Sticking a blue film on a car High-quality material, as a rule, has a self-adhesive base, which greatly facilitates the process of sticking with your own hands. The most important thing is to properly prepare the glass surface for gluing and adjust the dimensions exactly to the contour of the windshield. You can determine the dimensions of the windshield yourself or use the manufacturer's data for a specific car brand.
Like ordinary film, blue paint is sold in rolls, so there will be no problems with scoring and cutting. A special degreasing solution must be used to prepare the inside of the glass (a standard thinner will do). Before applying the solution, the glass must be cleaned of dust and dirt. The film should be applied carefully from the bottom up, you can use a squeegee to remove air bubbles at the contact points.
If there is no adhesive base, then tinting is applied using standard technology. For this, a building hair dryer and a soap solution are used. The layer is also applied from the bottom up. The same applies to tinting the side and rear windows of a car, however, a darker metallized athermal film (plus ion-plated layers) in blue or another color can be used for the rear windows so that they do not make what is inside the car visible from the outside.
If you decide to tint the windshield of your car with an opaque material with a blackout of any color, remember that when you meet with a traffic police officer, there is an almost one hundred percent chance that he will check the light transmission of the glass for compliance with GOST standards using a special device, and this can create additional inconvenience. Therefore, when tinting the windshield, we recommend using a high-quality film with a transparent base.
