Quadrifoglio models will remain: Alfa Romeo intends to produce “hot” electric cars
”Charged” battery cars of the Italian brand should appear on the European market in 2024.
Until recently, the Alfa Romeo brand was owned by the Italian-American company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Earlier this year, he teamed up with French group PSA. As a result, a new auto giant Stellantis appeared (the former names of the participants in the transaction are no longer used). The leadership of the new market player has decided to abandon all currently widespread brands, including the unprofitable Italian brand Alfa Romeo.
Hard hit by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, Alfa Romeo dealers sold 35,718 vehicles in Europe last year, down 34.3% from 2019, according to Carsalesbase. This year, the negative dynamics continues: in the first eight months (no fresh data yet), buyers bought 17,173 copies, which is 15.6% less than in the first eight months of 2020.
It is worth noting that in the current model range of the Italian brand there are only two models – the Giulia sedan and the Stelvio SUV. The place of the non-existent Giulietta hatchback (now dealers are selling cars left in warehouses) will then be occupied by the Tonale crossover. It will be the brand's first plug-in hybrid.
As it was previously known, after 2027 Alfa Romeo will only sell “green” cars. According to the head of the company, Jean-Philippe Imparato, the brand's first electric car will appear in 2024 and may receive a “charged” version with a recognizable addition to the Quadrifoglio name.
According to British publication Autocar, Alfa Romeo will consider a hot version of the Quadrifoglio for every brand model. But this does not mean that every car in this line will have “high performance“. According to Jean-Philippe Imparato, such cars must meet the requirements for “loaded” models of the premium segment.
In the near future, in 2022, the Tonale crossover should enter the market (its debut was postponed several times), in 2023 the Brenner compact SUV promises to appear. We remind you that the model will be based on STLA Small platforms (CMP). Its production will start at a plant in Poland, on the same line as the successors to the current Fiat 500X and Jeep Renegade. As we have already reported, Brenner will be a “relative” of such models as Opel Mokka and Peugeot 2008.
As it was previously known, in the future the line may expand with the flagship coupe and convertible. Their roles are expected to be played by re-named sports cars, GTV and Spider, respectively. It is possible that the same STLA Large platform will form the basis of a large coupe, on which the Giulia sedan and the new generation Stelvio crossover will be based in the future (they will probably appear towards the end of 2023).
