Crossover Suzuki SX4: a new generation is presented

With the introduction of the third-generation SX4 crossover (known in Europe as the dual name of the SX4 S-Cross), Suzuki calls it “completely new.” However, in fact, this is a deep modernization of the current model of the 2013 model. The platform, all nodes, as well as the body remained the same: the doors of the new SUV are exactly the same as those of the car of the previous model. However, there are also many changes.

The front of the body is completely new, the hood has become taller and more massive. The stern has also been completely redesigned, the shape of the additional windows in the C-pillars has also been changed, and the wheel arches are now adorned with massive plastic siding, which is given a rectangular shape. All lighting equipment is LED.

It is worth paying tribute to the designers: as a result, the Suzuki SX4 looks more massive and “older” than the previous crossover. Although the dimensions remained the same: length (4300mm), width (1785mm), height (1585mm) and wheelbase (2600mm) did not change by a millimeter. At the same time, the crossover has become lighter – the curb weight of the basic version for Europe has decreased from 1255 kg to 1195 kg.

Inside, the “ears” of the previous model protrude no less than outside: the contours of the front panel have been preserved, while the steering wheel, center console and door panels have remained the same. The most significant change is a new infotainment system with a nine-inch screen that now sits above the center air vents and rises above the dash. The main unit supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Switch devices and the traditional “handbrake” have been preserved. There is also a mechanism for adjusting the angle of inclination of the rear sofa backs. Trunk volume: the same 430 liters under the shelf, although the maximum capacity with the rear row folded down has decreased from 1269 to 1230 liters. The main innovation in the options list is the surround cameras instead of the rear lens. Panoramic roof and adaptive cruise control were already present on the European SX4.

In the local market, the Suzuki SX4 lost both the naturally aspirated engine and the original turbo configuration and diesel engine a long time ago. Since 2020, cars with the undisputed 1.4 Boosterjet turbo quattro have been offered here, which has also been updated to the new model. This engine develops 129 hp and 235 Nm and is also equipped with a 48 V starter-alternator that adds up to 14 hp in the first few seconds of acceleration and 50 Nm. The compact lithium-ion battery is located under the front passenger seat.

The choice is offered “mechanics” and six-speed “automatic”. In addition, both gearboxes are paired with both front-wheel drive and Allgrip all-wheel drive, which has different driving modes. The chassis of all cars is with a semi-independent rear suspension. In short, nothing fundamentally new.

The change will come next year when Suzuki introduces full-fledged hybrids capable of running on pure electric power. First, Vitara will acquire such a power plant, and then (in the second half of the year) the new SX4. Apparently, Toyota will help in the development of such versions. By 2025, the company promises only electric vehicles.
