Many motorists associate Toyota with three characteristics: simplicity, reliability, quality. The first car called the Corolla rolled off the assembly line in 1972. Even then, it was very popular due to the simplicity of design, automatic and manual transmission, as well as the versatility, thanks to which this model is still loved today. A distinctive feature of this body was the round headlights, which remained until 1988.

But the biggest hit was the iconic Corolla itself in the back of the E120. This is a car with a huge number of different configurations of transmissions and engines, a fairly large selection of trim levels. In many countries, these machines were “workhorses”, as they did not require large investments in repairs and maintenance, but simply had enormous resources and capabilities. There were even all-wheel drive versions! The design of this car is quite recognizable. In 2006, the model received a small cosmetic restyling, which slightly changed the front bumper and the shape of the fog lights.

Iconic “Toyota Corolla”: configuration

In fact, there were only two of them: Terra and Sol. We're starting to get to grips with the Toyota Corolla 120 trims. They have almost no differences, except that the richer Sol trim level introduced air conditioning instead of conventional air conditioning and power windows were added in the rear. This is where the differences end. There is, of course, a complete set: T-sport, but it is extremely rare or right-hand drive and the price tag is fabulous. The range of engines is also quite simple. In the European market, Corollas have three petrol and two diesel engines.

Gasoline engines of this machine: 1.4L (4ZZ-FE), 1.6L (3ZZ-FE), 1.8L (1ZZ-FE). They differ, perhaps, only in volume and power and have almost the same problems. These power units manufactured before 2005 have a habit of consuming large amounts of oil. But after 2005, the company corrected the technical flaw in the oil scraper rings and piston design, and this problem disappeared. In general, with proper maintenance, these engines do not cause serious problems. As for the diesel engines of this car 1.4 l (1ND-TV D-4D, 90 hp), 2.0 l (1CD-FTV D-4D), 90 hp), they only have problems with fuel system requiring high-quality fuel. Summing up, we can say that the entire line of engines has an incredible resource that allows this Toyota to easily overcome the milestone of 300 thousand kilometers,

New breakthrough!

The year 2006 came, when the 10th generation of the iconic Corolla was released. The new Corolla has changed dramatically, from headlights to an almost new interior. Of course, I immediately want to ask: “Did he remain as reliable as the last one?” And here the problems begin. It would seem, what could be the problem? But the main thing was not at all in the engine, but in a newly made gearbox called a robot. Toyota did introduce the same manual transmission, but instead of the driver, the electronics shift gears thanks to different actuators and their control units. Initially, the idea was good, but the robotic gearbox turned out to be so incomplete that in 2008 Toyota decided to completely abandon its installation on this model, returning the proven and already familiar hydraulically driven automatic transmission.

Range of engines and equipment

The first model of this body, like restyling, had two engines. The first is a brand new, but fairly reliable 1.6-liter engine (1ZR-FE) with a capacity of 124 horsepower. As well as a 1.4-liter engine (4ZZ-FE), which migrated to the new model from under the hood of the previous generation. However, already during restyling, this power unit was replaced by the company with a more modern 1.3-liter engine. True, there is little data on its reliability, since this ICE, unlike its predecessor, was not very popular. Judging by the reviews, the 1.6 engine does not have many significant drawbacks. In the first versions, there was a problem with the design of the water pump, which the manufacturer has eliminated. Also, the alternator pulley had a rather small resource and could fail pretty soon. There is also a problem with the Corolla strut: after a certain run, it starts to “knock”. But it was she who existed on the Corolla from the 120th body, so this problem was often simply turned a blind eye.

Options “Toyota Corolla” 150

This car belongs to class C, where the highest competition among automakers reigns. All companies produce their own C-class cars and all strive to be the best. Toyota is no exception. For the Toyota Corolla 140, there were three trim levels: “comfort”, “prestige” and “elegance”. In principle, as in the latest generation of this car, the Toyota Corolla configurations differ little from each other. For example, the Elegance and Prestige trims, unlike the Comfort trims, have climate control, rear power windows and fog lights. This is where the differences end. A complete set of “prestige” and “elegance” differ only in cruise control.

Then Toyota released a restyling of the 140th body and assigned it a larger number, which indicates that the restyling was quite deep. Two new Toyota Corolla configurations have been added: Comfort Plus and Elegance Plus. In addition, there have been big changes in the technical part of the car. The robotic gearbox has been removed and a comfort package has been added: adaptive cruise control, automatic parking system and adjustable pedals. The “safety” package includes a blind spot monitoring system and a stabilization system, and for the “comfort” package, airbags, windows (curtains) and an anti-lock braking system (ABS) are added to this package. In general, all configurations are quite similar, except for “prestige” and “elegance plus”: only they include climate control, fog lights, headlight washers and electrically folding mirrors. In addition, “Comfort” has a push-button engine start system, cruise control and a multifunction steering wheel.

The new “Corolla” – the Japanese queen

The new 160th Corolla body was just an incredible leap forward compared to its older “sisters”. The exterior of the car is quite aggressive, with elements of futurism. By the way, in the American market, the Corolla has the status of a sports sedan. It is very interesting that in the technical part it can be called sports. But as for the exterior design, the manufacturers have done a great job. There is something else that is unique to Japanese cars, perhaps a kind of sharp lines expressing the desire to drive thousands of kilometers. It is clear that the design of this car makes a person perceive it as upscale, and not as it really is.

The interior, oddly enough, looks good. We can say that Toyota has gone to the unification of the interiors of their cars, so the interior of this Corolla sends you to the interior of the flagship Camry. Finishing materials of the highest quality and pleasant to the touch, thanks to the versatility of the front console, a feeling of safety and protection. Higher trims have a modern multimedia system with a 7-inch display.

Variety of trim levels

Judging by the reviews, the configurations of the new Toyota Corolla 2017 are very different from each other. There are three engines in the line of internal combustion engines on the current market: the already known 1.3 l and 1.6 l, as well as a new 1.8 l engine. Prices for the most affordable equipment of this Toyota Corolla start at 975,000 conventional units. It has a 1.3L engine and a manual transmission. The most sophisticated Prestige set can be purchased for 1.349 million conventional units. Perhaps this is the only drawback of this model. Of course, for the money you get climate control, keyless entry with Start / Stop system, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera and a multimedia device with navigation. But this is outside the scope of this model. Initially, the Corolla was created as an economical, reliable and simple car. Undoubtedly it remained the same reliable and simple, but the main advantage of this model, namely accessibility, disappeared. Of course, there are trade-offs, such as the new configuration of the Toyota Corolla – “style”.

By the way, there is a very interesting fact going on here. The equipment of the new Toyota Corolla in the back of 2018 is no different from the 2017 model.

But even this negative point will not change people's attitudes towards this car: it is still the same first car in its class that will retain this title for many years to come.
