Serial electrocross Genesis GV60: cameras instead of mirrors and a “crystal ball” in the cabin
The Korean premium brand has unveiled the design of its new SUV. The model shares a platform with Hyundai and Kia trains, meaning it will also be available with rear or all-wheel drive.
The first electric car owned by Hyundai's Genesis brand was the Electrified G80 sedan, but it is made from a standard four-door with a similar index. But the GV60 cross is already the first electric model that does not have relatives with internal combustion engines. The brand itself has so far distributed only a few photos of the serial SUV and shared a general description, they promised to reveal all the characteristics “in the near future”.
The Genesis GV60 is built on the E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform) trolley, created specifically for the Hyundai-Kia concern electric trains: it also underlies the already presented Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 cross-hatch. This means that, like its non-premium relatives, the Genesis SUV will have rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, that is, it will be offered with one or two electric motors. In native Korea, the base Ioniq 5 is equipped with a 170-horsepower electric motor and a battery with a capacity of 58 kWh, the total output of the top two-engine five-door Hyundai is 306 hp, this version has a 72.6 kWh battery. The cheapest EV6 cross in terms of technology repeated the “initial” Ioniq 5, but the all-wheel drive top version of the Kia electric car is more powerful – its motors together produce 325 hp, in addition it has a battery with a capacity of 77.4 kWh. In addition, the EV6 still has a “charged” version of the GT with a 585-strong installation.
The appearance of the Genesis GV60 is made in the current corporate style of the brand, the main feature of which is two-way optics. But when compared with the rest of the Genesis, the SUV has its own characteristics: like relatives from Hyundai and Kia, the “sixtieth” received retractable door handles and a large hood floating on the wings. Also, the cross was distinguished by chrome “zigzags” flowing from the rear pillars to the tailgate. And the GV60 also has cameras instead of exterior mirrors (a similar solution is provided for the Ioniq 5), although simpler versions will probably have ordinary mirrors.
Inside – a virtual “tidy” and a touchscreen of a multimedia system combined with each other. The role of the central tunnel (it is not in the car) is played by the console, “grown” from the armrest, and on it are cup holders, a number of keys, a washer responsible for multimedia control and a transmission selector made in the form of a sphere. By the way, we saw a similar ball on the Genesis X conceptual coupe, presented last spring. It works like this: when the engine (engines) of the GV60 are turned off, the sphere is shown with its “crystal” side, which also glows, and as soon as the engine is started, it turns over and the box selector appears. In addition, additional displays were installed in the cabin on the doors, which display images from external cameras. True, it does not look like a premium.
