The problem of poor starting of the VAZ injection engine at sub-zero temperatures and its solution – personal experience
Now the matter is actively approaching winter, and despite the changeable weather, in the very near future a stable minus will be established on the street, and for some car owners this will cause another launch problem. And today we will not talk about problems with batteries or spark plugs, all this is already known to everyone.
At one time, I encountered a problem on my Kalina, which is still relevant for many of these models, and for other VAZs produced in a certain period, which have similar defects with my car.
For those who do not remember, let me remind you that my ex Kalina was originally bought new from the salon, and in the first couple of years it did not give me any problems at all. But already at the end of the second wintering, I began to notice that the engine start became somehow sluggish and uncertain. Not to say that the car started badly, it just required a little more starter work than usual.
I did not attach much importance to this then, and soon warm spring days came, along with which my problem disappeared. But when the third winter came, starting the engine became even more difficult. And if at minus 3-5 degrees it was not yet felt so strongly, then below minus 10 the car already began to mope in full.
And as usual, it all started with the most banal — I replaced the spark plugs, at the same time I changed the gas station — you never know what miracles happen. But the miracle did not happen, and all this in no way affected the engine start for the better. There were also suspicions about the ignition coil, but when I changed it to a new one, no shifts were found either.
Time passed, and meanwhile the winter was coming to an end. I will not talk about my other torment, and I will only say that literally everything was replaced electronically, from the crankshaft, camshaft, mass air flow sensor, coolant temperature sensor and ending with such procedures as checking compression in cylinders and measuring pressure in the fuel line. But everything with the car was normal, but it didn't want to start up, such an infection, normally.
When all the methods were exhausted, it was decided to turn to knowledgeable people, which of course had to be done from the very beginning, but you know how it happens, you think, now I’ll figure it out myself -) As you remember, all this happened with Lada Kalina, and when I came to the master and told about the existing problem, he immediately pretended to guess the reason for such a breakdown, and immediately specified what year my car was.
I answered him that I had bought it at the beginning of 2011, and then he looked at the engine control unit and said that such a problem had very often been encountered on many Kalinas since 2010 and the Itelm M73 controller.
In simple terms, the brains froze and the car refused to start normally… And to make sure for himself and convince me of this, he installed the January 7.2 + ECU (if my memory does not fail) and told me to try to start it the next morning.
To my surprise, the next morning my Kalina's engine started up briskly, and of course I immediately went to my master, explaining the situation to him again. In the end, if you don’t go into details, then from his words he remade the block for me under “January”, and after that, all subsequent winters with this control unit, Kalina started up the first time without problems.
Again, this does not mean at all that it is necessary to change the M73 to January. This should be done only if the block has such a defect and freezes at low temperatures.
